Give me your tired , your poor ,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free ,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore
Send these , the homeless , the tempest-tost , to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”
– Emma Lazarus
In 1995 , the last five lines of the poem “The New Colossus” was changed in which the line beginning “The wretched refuse ….” was DELETED.
Several scholars were upset at this , saying that the poem no longer represented what Lazarus had written.
Do you agree ?…disagree? Is calling immigrants “wretched refuse” POLITICALLY INCORRECT.
What part of the COMMUNICATIONS theory is in play here ?
