Perform a close reading of Darko Suvin’s “Estrangement and Cognition.” Identify Suvin’s most important claims and the reasoning used to support these claims. You will need to be selective as to which claims you choose to focus on, seeing as this is an extremely complex and difficult piece of writing. The goal of this assignment is to learn how to make partial understanding productive. How is science fiction, as opposed to other genres, “a literature of cognitive estrangement” (Suvin 4)? Define the terms cognition and estrangement as used in the text and explain how they work together in science fiction. What function does the “novum” serve in science fiction (4, 63)? How does Suvin distinguish science fiction from fantasy?
Although you are encouraged to use some direct quotations in this assignment, make sure you also rephrase the quotations in your own words to maximize reading comprehension and practice redeploying Suvin’s ideas in your own writing. Don’t forget to weave your quotations into sentences of your own!
