Anita and Larry have been married for 10 years and have two children, ages 9 and 7. They married after
dating for four years and had already started their careers. Anita is a 40-year-old, Indigenous female born
on Native lands. At the age of 6 her family move to Canada. She works in advertising. Larry is 42, born
in China and identifies as an Asian male. He moved to Canada at the age 13 and tried to assimilate to the
Canadian culture, however his parents remained committed to their original cultural values. Larry is a
Vice President in Sales and Marketing for a Fortune 500 company. They have xx number of children ages
xx and xx.
After 10 years of marriage, they both report feeling "bored" in the relationship and less interested in each
other. They infrequently communicate and feel there is not much time or desire for sexual intimacy with
each other. Anita feels Larry is becoming more controlling of her activities and socializing with her
girlfriends. When they do talk, they find themselves arguing over minor issues that evolve into bigger
issues and sometimes these disagreements turn into a lot of yelling and an occasion some emotional
abuse.
They say that they still enjoy each other’s company, but they do not spend a significant amount of time
together even if they both have free time. Both Anita and Larry work full time and their evenings consist
of baseball, soccer, lacrosse and homework.
Anita and Larry explained that when they were dating, and even early on in their marriage, they would
travel, hike, and talk for many hours. They always made sure to find time for each other even when they
were busy with work.
