In approaching this topic you should read the short article by Christopher J.H. Wright,

( Wright, Christopher J H. “Learning To Love Leviticus: Even Those Passages About Shellfish, Mixed Fibers, And Animal Sacrifices.” Christianity Today 57.6 (2013): 30-34) focusing in particular on the section entitled “Sex in Leviticus.” 

Think about Leviticus 18:22 (the quotation above) in light of Lunde’s chapters( Lunde, Jonathan. Following Jesus, the Servant King: A Biblical Theology of Covenantal Discipleship. Zondervan, 2010.  Chapters 7-9) this week on Jesus fulfilling Mosaic law as filter, lens and prism. Think critically about what each “function” (filter, lens, prism) might mean for this specific issue, and any criteria for deciding which function might be considered valid.

NOTE: It is clearly understood that this topic is controversial within society and the church. It is chosen in part because it IS current and controversial, but also because the Bible has much to say about sexuality and because wise, discerning interpretation of biblical texts and how they inform contemporary discipleship is so important. Take your time applying the textbook’s teachings to this passage and formulating your Discussion Post. Remember, you will be graded not on your position on this issue but on your fulfillment of the assignment’s instructions.  

Instructions:

Write an initial post in which you pick one of the 3 “functions” (filter, lens or prism) and suggest how it might be interpreted if Christ were to function as that for this law. Be sure to:

1. Suggest any reasons that might be adduced in support of viewing it in that way.
2. Consider any related questions (for example, with the “filter” function what possible “fulfilled reality” might continue, etc.).
3. Discuss how a robust understanding of Jesus as the fulfillment of the Law corrects against misunderstandings within Christian ethical and theological discourse.
